Frequently asked questions

Can you unlock a PDF without the password?
No — and that's deliberate. HivePDF removes a password you already know; it does not crack, guess, or brute-force passwords. If you don't have the password, we can't help you open the file.
Does my file or password get uploaded?
No. Everything runs in your browser with WebAssembly. Your PDF and the password you enter never leave your device.
It says wrong password — what now?
Double-check the password, including capitalisation. Some PDFs have a separate owner password; you need the password that opens the document. If it still fails, the password is incorrect.
Why remove the password at all?
So you can open, search, print, and share the file without re-entering the password each time. Only remove protection from files you're allowed to.

Stop typing the password every time

If you have a PDF that asks for a password every time you open it, and you know that password, HivePDF can produce a copy with the password removed. It uses the open-source qpdf engine in your browser to decrypt the file with the password you provide and save an unprotected version. Your file and password stay on your device the whole time.

Only passwords you know

This tool removes a password you already have — it will not crack, guess, or bypass an unknown password. That's a firm line: recovering access to a file you don't have the password for isn't something HivePDF does. If the password is wrong, you'll get a clear message and nothing is produced.

Good to know

Once unlocked, the downloaded PDF has no password and can be opened, printed, and edited normally. If you want to protect it again — perhaps with a different password or new restrictions — use Protect PDF. Only remove protection from documents you have the right to access.
