- How is this different from Unlock?
- Unlock removes an open password you know. Remove Restrictions targets files that open freely but have owner-password limits on printing or copying — it lifts those limits.
- Will it work if the PDF asks for a password to open?
- No. If the file needs a password just to open, use Unlock first — this tool only removes restrictions on files you can already read.
- Does my file get uploaded?
- No. Restrictions are removed entirely in your browser with qpdf — nothing leaves your device.
Print and copy your own documents
Some PDFs open fine but won't let you print or copy text, because they carry owner-password permission flags. When it's your document (or you have the right to use it), Remove Restrictions lifts those flags so the file behaves normally — all in your browser.
Restrictions, not passwords
This is for files that don't ask for a password to open but still block actions. It does not crack or bypass an open password: if a PDF demands a password just to view it, Unlock is the tool, and you'll need the password. We never crack passwords.

How the permission flags actually work
A PDF's owner-password restrictions live in the encryption dictionary as a set of permission bits — one bit says printing is allowed, another says copying is allowed, another says form-filling or annotation is allowed. The file is still encrypted, which is why qpdf is needed to touch it, but the user password is blank, so any viewer opens it without prompting. Remove Restrictions decrypts the file, flips every permission bit to allowed, and re-saves it with those restrictions lifted.
When you'll actually hit this
This comes up most with PDFs exported from older software, government or bank statements, and scanned forms where "printing disabled" or "copying disabled" was baked in by default rather than as a deliberate choice. It also shows up on files inherited from someone else's workflow — a template locked down years ago that nobody remembers the reasoning for.
Before you strip restrictions
Only remove restrictions on files you have the rights to modify. A locked contract, license agreement, or exam paper may be restricted on purpose, and lifting that lock doesn't change the legal terms attached to the document — it just changes what your PDF reader will let you do with the file. If you're the one setting restrictions rather than removing them, use Change Permissions to choose exactly what's allowed, or Protect PDF if you actually want an open password rather than just permission limits.
