How to Add a Header and Footer to a PDF
Updated July 13, 2026
A report or contract without a running header reads worse than one with a title up top and a page count at the bottom — but adding that by hand to every page is tedious. This tool stamps it onto the whole document at once.
Steps
- Open Header & Footer and drop your PDF.
- Type text into any of the six slots — header and footer, each with a left, center, and right position.
- Use
{page},{total},{date}, and{time}where you want those values, then apply and download.
Dynamic placeholders
The four placeholders are filled in per page, not typed once: {page} / {total} becomes 3 / 12 on page three of a twelve-page document, and {date} uses your local date at the moment you run the tool. If your document shouldn’t start counting at 1 — a cover page, or a continuation of an earlier file — set the starting number and everything after it follows from there.
Six slots, one pass
Rather than choosing a single spot, you get header and footer each split into left, center, and right, so a title can sit top-left while the page count sits bottom-center and a date sits bottom-right — all stamped in one run, in Helvetica at your chosen size.
Notes
This runs entirely in your browser, so the file never leaves your device. For a diagonal or translucent overlay across the whole page instead of running text, use Add Watermark; if all you need is page numbers with no other text, Add Page Numbers is the more focused tool.
