Why covering text isn’t redaction

Most PDF editors treat a black rectangle like any other annotation: a shape placed at a layer above the page content. Visually, the text disappears. Structurally, it’s still there — select-and-copy, a text extraction tool, or even just changing the box’s opacity can reveal it again. True redaction means removing the underlying content, not hiding it.

How real redaction works
